When I moved to Columbia in 1972 to start college at USC on the GI Bill, Earle was the most helpful person I knew there. He was studying to become a pharmacist, while I was just getting started as a freshman. He helped me find a place to stay and renewed our friendship. We even went on a double-date together. I may have spoiled the mood of my date by laughing at the wrong scenes in the drive-in showing of "True Grit". (I thought it was very amusing when John Wayne took the reins in his teeth.)

I had known Earle since we both moved to Lesslie Elementary School at the same time in the sixth grade. We weren't close friends, but I'll never forget his kindness in 1972.
